racial ethnic group

As a result, the family changes that accompanied industrialization also varied across class and racial-ethnic groups. By using mixed methods, Lee and Bean (2010) were able not only to identify the relative frequency of interracial marriages for different racial-ethnic groups in the United States but also to understand the different meanings that these partnerships have depending on the racial makeup of the couple. Sociologists try to understand these differences by looking at social structure-how do these different marriage patterns reflect the different social locations that racial-ethnic groups occupy in American society? Instead, we can see how structural conditions shape marriage patterns among African Americans, just as they do among other racial-ethnic groups. High rates of unemployment and incarceration of young Black men in poor communities limit the supply of eligible spouses for heterosexual Black women in those communities (who have low rates of intermarriage with men of other racial-ethnic groups).
